Nebraska Furniture Mart

With sixteen acres devoted to shopping, Nebraska Furniture Mart wanted to become North America’s largest home furnishing store–and a Kansas City destination.

Our answer to the challenge of scale was to organize it in a way that gives it energy, style, and personal appeal.

Starting with the parking lot, we set the stage for the Nebraska Furniture Mart experience with landscaping, music and fountains. The building captures the imagination with its grand two-and-a-half story entrance — the first hint of the phenomenal selection.

Once inside, shoppers are guided by skylit “dream houses” that bring together merchandise from all departments to showcase the latest trends. After absorbing the inspiration of these room displays, customers follow color-coded wayfinding systems to the corresponding departments that make up the landscape of a home.

To maximize shopper marketing, we used smart adjacencies and cross-merchandising techniques that allow customers to interact with the store on a personal level and be exposed to the store’s full offerings.

Although Nebraska Furniture Mart is primarily a day long shopping destination, we designed its home décor areas for shorter shopping sprees. We also created the store’s charming fast-casual restaurant to refresh its captive audience.

Steady growth in the bottom line proves the store is successfully showcasing its massive variety of styles and price levels, maximizing sales, profit, and marketing opportunities.
